3 October 2003 - Peterborough, UK-based specialist engineering company Peter Brotherhood Ltd has announced a new joint venture with leading wind turbine supplier REpower Systems AG marking a new phase in the company's plans for future growth and expansion.
REpower, based in Hamburg, Germany, is a designer and manufacturer of multi-megawatt wind turbines. The new joint venture, which will be known as REpower UK Ltd, will enable the German company to supply, service and support its products throughout the UK.
Peter Brotherhood has extensive experience in designing and manufacturing equipment, such as steam turbines, for use in renewable energy applications. The addition of wind turbines to its product portfolio is a natural development and compliments the company's existing skills.
'The wind energy supply chain represents a huge opportunity in the UK,' said Steve Clarke, business development manager, for Peter Brotherhood. 'Our skills and expertise in working on renewable energy projects, coupled with the leading technology and premium quality of REpower's innovative product range, means that we are very well placed to effectively serve this market.'
The joint venture has already opened an office in Edinburgh to provide local support for customers in Scotland and discussions with several prospective customers are at an advanced stage.
"The UK is an important new market for us," said professor Fritz Vahrenholt, chief executive officer of REpower. 'Newly introduced government initiatives in the UK mean that there will be a great deal of interest in developing wind farms. Finding a partner in the UK with the appropriate background and expertise to reach this market was essential. We are in no doubt that this joint venture with Peter Brotherhood will be highly successful.'
Stephen Timms, Energy Minister, said: "I am delighted at today's announcement, which is a significant step in the developing UK renewable energy market. The joint venture between Peter Brotherhood Ltd and REpower Systems AG is an excellent example of how the UK is creating and exploiting business opportunities in the rapidly developing renewable energy supply chain. As the next phase of wind farm development moves from planning to construction, ventures like this will help the UK's renewable energy vision become a reality."
REpower manufactures a range of wind turbines up to 5 MW. It has installed over 900 turbines worldwide with a total output exceeding 400 MW.
