2 October 2003 - Security of supply and liberalisation of European energy markets formed the focus of the first speech given today (Thursday) by new Chairman of UK energy regulator Ofgem, Sir John Mogg.
Sir John, who officially took up his post yesterday (Wednesday), was speaking at the annual seminar held by the Gas Forum, which represents major players in the UK gas industry.
He said: "Britain is no longer an energy island. That is why Ofgem intends to devote more resources and effort to help shape the debate on liberalisation of energy markets in Europe. A more integrated Europe could increasingly provide added reassurance that secure supplies in Britain can be maintained - a vital issue that will be at the heart of the energy regulator's work.
Sir John also used the occasion to stress the importance of the gas network in maintaining a secure electricity supply, all the more so as Britain moves from being a significant exporter to a net importer of gas.
"Giving priority to these areas will be among the most effective ways of meeting our primary duty to protect the interests of British gas and electricity consumers - something I intend to pursue with vigour and determination."
