GE wind turbine technology selected for new wind power station in Japan

2 October 2003 - GE Wind Energy is supplying 20 of its 1.5 MW wind turbines to Rokkasyomura Wind Development Co. Ltd., a subsidiary of Japan Wind Development (JWD) Co. Ltd., for its Rokkasho-mura Wind Project - soon to become one of Japan's largest wind power installations.

The project is currently under construction in Rokkasho-mura, located in the eastern part of Aomori Prefecture, approximately 50 kilometers north of the city of Misawa. When the project is completed later this month, the power will be purchased by Tohoku Electric Power Company under a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA). The project will add 30 MW of clean, wind energy capacity to the Japanese electricity grid.

Supported by Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, the project's engineering, procurement and construction services are being provided by Kandenko Co. Ltd. of Tokyo. Earlier this year, GE supplied 10 of its 1.5-megawatt wind turbines to a consortium including JWD for the Hibikinada Wind Project located on the coast of Hibikinada, Japan.

"We are pleased that our 1.5 MW wind turbine technology again has been selected by JWD, a leading wind developer in Japan," said Alan Sides, country manager for GE Wind Energy. "The 30 MW Rokkasho project supports Japan's renewable energy target which encourages the production of three gigawatts of new renewable energy for Japan by the year 2010."

Established in July 1999, JWD of Tokyo is an international wind project developer. In March of 2003, JWD was listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange as the first wind business venture in Japan, and currently is expanding its market reach.

The GE 1.5 MW wind turbines being used for the Rokkasho project are among the most widely sold wind turbines in the megawatt class. Today, more than 1,600 of these machines are operating in Germany, Spain, the Netherlands, Ireland, Belgium, Sweden, Japan and the United States.
