BERWICK, Pa., Oct. 1, 2003 -- Unit 1 at PPL's Susquehanna nuclear power plant in Luzerne County near Berwick, Pa., returned to service Tuesday afternoon. The unit shut down automatically early Wednesday morning, Sept. 24, when one of three feedwater pumps shut down.
"Plant personnel conducted a thorough inspection of the pumps and an investigation of what led to the shutdown," said Herbert D. Woodeshick, special assistant to the president for PPL Susquehanna. "Our investigation determined that an incorrect equipment setting during a routine test caused the pump to stop working."
The pump shutdown led to a drop in water level and to an automatic reactor shutdown. "Plant systems worked as they were designed during the shutdown," Woodeshick said.
Prior to this event, Unit 1 ran continuously for 144 days. The plant's Unit 2 reactor was unaffected and remained at full power.
The Susquehanna plant, located about seven miles north of Berwick, is owned jointly by PPL Susquehanna LLC and Allegheny Electric Cooperative Inc. and is operated by PPL Susquehanna.
PPL Susquehanna is one of PPL Corporation's generating facilities. Headquartered in Allentown, Pa., PPL Corp. controls about 11,500 megawatts of generating capacity in the United States, sells energy in key U.S. markets and delivers electricity to customers in Pennsylvania, the United Kingdom and Latin America.
