Oct. 1, 2003 -- California utility regulators will decide on Thursday whether Pacific Gas & Electric Co. can go ahead with a planned upgrade on a major transmission line into the San Francisco Bay area.
If approved, the $20 million project would convert the capacity of a 12-mile transmission line from 60 kV to 115 kV, Dow Jones reported. Experts predict the line could reach its limits by fall 2004 if it isn't upgraded.
The utility also plans to build a new 230-kV buried transmission line between its Jefferson substation in Redwood City to the Martin substation, a project that would bring an additional 400 MW to the region. That project is estimated to cost $220 million and be completed by fall 2005.
The California Public Utilities Commission is working on a final environmental impact report. If the approval comes through as expected by May of next year, construction could be finished by September of 2005.
