29 September 2003 - UK energy regulator Ofgem is considering an inquiry into E.ON -owned Powergen on suspicion that the company tried to manipulate power prices by selective mothballing of power plants.
A report in The Sunday Times> newspaper said Ofgem has asked Powergen to hand over e-mails and trading information relating to the period but no formal complaint has been made. The newspaper added that Ofgem looking at "technical availability" and is concerned that an outage at one of Powergen's plants, Kingsnorth in the south of England, was related to market manipulation.
Ofgem has reportedly asked Powergen for information but has not yet launched a formal investigation.
