26 September 2003 - Consulting engineers Vattenfall Europe PowerConsult GmbH (VPC) have been awarded an order by the Indian power station operator Andhra Pradesh Power Generation Corporation Ltd. (APGenco) for design, tendering, construction management and commissioning of a highly efficient unit for the power station Vijayawada.
Vattenfall Europe's consulting branch VPC succeeded an international competition against German and American heavyweight competitors.
The intended 660 MW unit is planned as an extension of the existing coal-fired power station Vijayawada in the Federal State of Andhra Pradesh, which consists at present of six 210 MW units operating with a net efficiency of 33 per cent.
The extension project is characterised by the employment of modern technology with elevated, so-called supercritical pressures and temperatures in the steam cycle of the extension unit, so that the net efficiency of about 40 per cent can be achieved. Thus the release of green house gas CO2 per a produced kWh in relation to usual technology in India is lowered significantly. That would have a model character for India.
In the course of the project also rehabilitation measures at the old power station will be implemented aiming on lowering maintenance costs and bettering environmental performance.
As Vattenfall Europe's consulting branch, VPC has considerable first hand experience in the design, construction, commissioning and operation of the power stations Schwarze Pumpe, Boxberg IV and Lippendorf. It is responsible in a first phase for optimisation of the plant concept, development of the complete tender documents for EPC contract, bidding procedure, bid evaluation until assignment of the EPC contract. In a subsequent phase after financial closure APGenco will be supported during the complete construction and commissioning phase.
A large dedicated expert team consisting of German and Indian specialists will carry out the work. Vattenfall Europe PowerConsult is supported by the company Lahmeyer International GmbH of Germany and the Indian companies TCE Consulting Engineers and Lahmeyer International India.
The project is partly financed in the context of financial co-operation between Germany and India by the Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW). The entire duration of the project will be around four years.
