Nearly 95 per cent of BGE customers back in service following Isabel

25 September 2003 - Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE) this morning announced that it has restored power to nearly 95 per cent of its customers who were left without power as a result of Hurricane Isabel and a subsequent storm that passed through the region Tuesday morning.

BGE and out-of-state utility crews have moved into the final phase of BGE's restoration plan, focusing their efforts on clearing trees and repairing power lines that feed small numbers of customers and individual homes and businesses.

"We're heading into the final stretch of what has been a long and arduous restoration effort," said Ken DeFontes, vice president of electric transmission and distribution. "With each passing day, it's clear that Isabel left in her wake considerable damage to BGE's electric distribution system. We remain focused on restoring service as quickly and as safely as possible for our customers who have yet to have their service restored and continue to thank them for their patience and understanding."

Since last Friday, combined crews of nearly 4,300 utility workers from 27 states and Canada have restored electricity to more than 650,000 customers. BGE anticipates all storm-related outages not impacted by flooding to be restored by late Friday.
