Water pump failure causes automatic shutdown at PPL Susquehanna Unit 1

BERWICK, Pa., Sept. 24, 2003 -- Unit 1 at PPL's Susquehanna nuclear power plant in Luzerne County near Berwick, Pa., automatically shutdown early Wednesday morning when one of three feedwater pumps that supply water to its reactor stopped working.

The loss of the feedwater pump caused the water level in the Unit 1 reactor to drop initiating a full shutdown of the unit at 12:53 a.m.

"The plant's systems worked properly during the shutdown and the unit is stable," said Herbert D. Woodeshick, special assistant to the president for PPL Susquehanna. "PPL has begun an investigation to better understand why the shutdown occurred. When that is complete, we will restart the unit." Prior to this event, Unit 1 ran continuously for 144 days. The plant's Unit 2 reactor continues to operate at 100 percent power.

PPL Susquehanna LLC is a member of the PPL family of companies. PPL Corporation (NYSE: PPL - News) is a global energy company headquartered in Allentown, Pa.

PPL Susquehanna is a 2,300 MW nuclear generation facility in Salem Township, Luzerne County, Pa. Fifty additional MW are in development, PPL said. PPL is a 90 percent owner of the facility.
