24 September 2003 - India's Reliance group company BSES Ltd and Tata Power proposes to set up a 1000-2000 MW thermal power station around the capital, entailing a minimum investment of about Rs 30bn($655m).

Reliance Energy Director J.P. Chalsani said the company's board has approved in-principle the project and Reliance is looking for possible locations for the plant. " We are currently exploring various options to set up a gas based thermal power station at a location in and around New Delhi",

Chalsani said Reliance group plans to invest 15bn-20bn rupees in its Delhi power distribution business over the next one to two years.

Reliance Energy and Tata Power acquired Delhi's power distribution rights in July 2002. Delhi's current power capacity is 380 MW.
