USTDA supports renewable energy in Jordan

15 September 2003 - The US Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) will partially fund a feasibility study with the Jordanian Ministry of Planning for US based Delenova Energy to acquire and expand two wind power plants in the northern part of the Kingdom, it was announced last week.

The $179 124 grant for the study is designed to explore renewable power generation, in accordance with the Jordanian government's goal of producing five per cent of the country's electric power from renewable sources by 2010, stated a press release.

The efficiency of the two publicly owned wind power plants could increase by 30 per cent with additional resources, including General Electric 1.5 MW wind turbines.

With limited domestic fuel resources, the Jordanian government strongly encourages renewable power generation and has committed to produce five percent of its electric power from renewable sources by 2010.

In support of the country's renewable energy initiative, Delenova Energy is looking to acquire the Al-Ibrahyymia and Hofa plants and expanding those facilities with equipment from GE Wind Energy.

The USTDA advances economic development and US commercial interests in developing and middle-income countries. The agency funds various forms of technical assistance, feasibility studies, training, orientation visits and business workshops that support the development of a modern infrastructure and trading environment.
