15 September 2003 - The Abu Dhabi Water & Electricity Authority (ADWEA) will be the lead sponsor at the forthcoming POWER-GEN Middle East 2003 conference and exhibition this 13-15 October at the Abu Dhabi International Exhibitions Centre (ADIEC) in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
POWER-GEN Middle East is the definitive conference and exhibition in the Middle East region focusing on power generation, transmission & distribution and associated desalination issues.
Launched in Abu Dhabi in October last year, POWER-GEN Middle East combines the region's largest exhibition featuring the world's top power companies and regional utilities with a high-level three-day conference which addresses the region's burgeoning demand for electricity and clean drinking water. The UAE alone is estimated to need additional capacity of 8,000 MW of power in the next 10 years, while Saudi Arabia, the largest country in the region, will require an additional capacity of 20,000 MW by 2010. POWER-GEN Middle East's conference programme focuses on issues pivotal to meeting rapid demand across the Middle East - taking in grid development; privatization reforms; project financing; IWPP project development; and latest technological developments and processes.
The conference also brings high ranking individuals with key responsibility for restoring and rebuilding power supply in Iraq to Abu Dhabi to discuss the implications for the power industry of the reconstruction process in Iraq. This is the first time publicly that senior figures from the Iraq Electricity Commission and Bechtel Ltd and other influential bodies will address the power crisis in Iraq.
Dr Karim Hasan, Director General of the Iraq Electricity Commission, Chief Engineer Mr Raad M Ghazi Al 'Hariss, Director General of Generation and Transmission of Electric Energy in Iraq, Dr Qasim Al 'Akayshee of the Iraq Professional Forum and Mr Dean Hagerty, Bechtel's Project Manager responsible for power supply in Iraq, will be joined by high ranking professionals from organizations active in Iraq including Dr Ranald Spiers, International Development Director of International Power; Mr Mark Lemmon, Director of Project and Export Finance at HSBC Investment Bank's utilities sector and Mr Alexander Kritzalis, Partner at US law firm White & Case LLP.
Large-scale projects in the Middle East are now moving forward due to the end of the Iraq war. POWER-GEN Middle East's exhibition features regional power and water utilities charged with responsibility for ensuring rapidly increasing regional demand for electrical power is met. ADWEA and its nine subsidiary entities will be joined on the exhibition floor at ADIEC by DEWA (Dubai Electricity & Water Authority) and the Union of Water and Electricity.
ADWEA is a public organization, wholly owned by the government of Abu Dhabi, having separate legal entities and financial and administrative independence. ADWEA is responsible for implementing the Abu Dhabi government's policy of privatization of the water and electricity sector under which ADWEA is engaged in commissioning and implementing a number of independent water and power projects (IWPPs) of which the authority retains 60% ownership on behalf of the government, with 40% allotted to the strategic partner in a special purpose vehicle (SPV). Following the execution of IWPP projects at Taweelah A2, Taweelah A1, Shuweihat SI and Umm Al Nar, ADWEA has just recently invited competitive tenders for its fifth and latest IWPP at the Al Mirfa Power and Water Plant, a new 600-700 MW facility located on the Arabian Coast about 170 km from Abu Dhabi and 5 km from the town of Al Mirfa.
Companies tendering for the Al Mirfa IWPP are likely to include International Power, TotalFinaElf, Mitsubishi and CMS. Senior representatives from HSBC Bank and White & Case LLP - two of the companies advising ADWEA on the Al Mirfa IWPP project - will be represented on the panel at POWER-GEN Middle East's special opening conference track focusing on rebuilding Iraq's power infrastructure. More than 110 international and regional power companies including Ansaldo Energia, Bechtel, Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Co, GE Power Systems, Innogy, Masaood John Brown, Saudi Cable Company, and Siemens AG Power Generation will be exhibiting their latest products and services at POWER-GEN Middle East.
Nick Ornstien, General Manager and Group Publisher of PennWell's Global Energy Group says: "ADWEA's sponsorship - along with the special conference focus on Iraq - will ensure that this year's POWER-GEN Middle East is even more successful than the launch event in October last year. We are extremely honoured to be working with ADWEA again and look forward to an extremely fruitful three days for all participants when the international power community once again convenes in Abu Dhabi next month."
