BURLINGTON, Mass., Aug. 25, 2003 -- InterGen announced that Cottonwood, a 1,235 megawatt (MW), natural gas-fired, combined-cycle power facility, has achieved commercial operations and is dispatching into the Entergy power grid.
The Cottonwood plant is located approximately two hours due east of Houston, in Deweyville, Texas.
The Cottonwood plant, which is among the cleanest and most efficient fossil-fuel plants in the country, represents a trend across the United States towards replacing older plants with cleaner, less expensive and more reliable power. The facility's 1,235 MWs are sufficient to power more than one million homes. Energy Management Services for Cottonwood are being provided by Houston-based Coral Energy.
"We are very pleased to be bringing Cottonwood online, as it is the first of three large facilities that we will be moving into commercial operations in the U.S. market over the next several months," said Marvin Odum, CEO of InterGen.
The Cottonwood project has had a very positive economic impact on the Deweyville area. Cottonwood has significantly increased the Newton County tax base, a majority of the increased revenues being directed to the Deweyville Independent School District. Furthermore, by the end of the facility's construction phase, over $65 million had been committed to area business and suppliers. Finally, at peak construction, over 700 people were employed in building the plant. Cottonwood is active with neighboring communities, partnering in educational, economic and civic projects.
