Aug.6, 2003 -- Britain gave the go-ahead on Aug. 5 for a 430-MW, coal-fired power station to be built by Coalpower Ltd. at the Hatfield Colliery at Doncaster in northern England.
The scheme has already received planning permission from Doncaster Council. Coalpower, set up by coal entrepreneur Richard Budge, bought the Hatfield colliery in 2001 and invested £5 million (UK)to restart production there.
Few power stations have been built recently in the UK because of a steep fall in wholesale electricity prices caused by greater competition.
Prices have shown signs of recovery in the last couple of months but are still far below highs seen in the late 1990s.
