Aug. 1, 2003 -- A new energy plant based on natural gas is significantly reducing the environmental impact of Trelleborg Industrial Hose's operations in Clermont-Ferrand, at the same time as it is substantially cutting costs. This is the first plant of its kind in this region.
Trelleborg Industrial Hose in Clermont-Ferrand is one of the Group's largest plants. Here, industrial hoses are produced for many different applications, ranging from special hoses for use within the food industry to large-diameter hoses for customers in the offshore sector. A plant like this consumes a substantial amount of energy and since January this year a new energy plant has been installed and running. It is the first plant of its type in the region, and only the fourth in the whole of France. The project has aroused major interest from both authorities and the general public.
"The project has been in progress for three years and now that the plant has been in operation for some time, we can note that it is generating the major environmental and financial gains we hoped" says Jean- Louis Merle, responsible for the environment, quality and safety at Trelleborg Industrial Hose.
The so-called triple-generation plant functions on a recovery principle and enables electricity, steam and cooling to be produced from natural gas. Basically, the new plant has completely eliminated sulfur dioxide emissions, reduced carbon dioxide emissions by 24 percent and cut water consumption by nearly 70 percent.
Trelleborg has worked closely on the project with French company Idex, which installed the plant and retains responsibility for it. Several other companies and organizations have taken part in the project, including Gaz de France (gas-supply equipment), ADEME (Agency for the Environment and Energy Resources) and the European Regional Development Fund.
