1 August 2003 - UK power and gas supplier, Centrica plc, yesterday said it plans to spend £500m ($805m) on its own green energy production, mostly from offshore wind farms.
Chief executive Sir Roy Gardener made the announcement at the same time as releasing figures for the group for the six month period to June, which had generated a 6 per cent rise in pre-tax profits to £576m (£542m).
The company intends to build 1000 MW of renewable energy generation by 2010 which would account for five5 of Centrica's current electricity sales. The cost of the planned facilities would be around 7pond;1bn with Centrica planning to seek joint ventures partners to fund the remaining costs.
Patricia Hewett, trade and industry secretary said the investment would help meet the government's target of generating ten per cent of Britain's electricity from renewable energy by 2010.
