30 July 2003 - Japan's Kyowa Exeo Corporation has started marketing a wind power generation system featuring propellers that can create electricity regardless of the direction the wind is blowing in, according to company officials.
The Hybrid Wings power generation system has a set of two blades: one that spins due to winds that blow horizontally and the other that spins due to winds that blow vertically. This mechanism allows the system to generate energy from light winds blowing at speeds as slow as two meters per second. It is also quieter and more durable than the conventional wind power generators, the officials claim.
The Darrieus-Savonius power generation system was developed by Takumi Hashizume, professor at Waseda University, and is manufactured by E&E Ltd., a power plant developer located in Osaka.
The system comes in different models with power generation capacity ranging from 500 watts to 20kwh. Prices are set between 5 million yen ($41,700) and 20 million yen, excluding installation fees.
Kyowa Exeo targets first-year sales of 300 million yen, mainly to corporations and local governments interested in energy conservation.
