UWEC awards Dh137m deal to Sogex Oman

29 July 2003 - U.A.E.'s Union Water and Electricity Company (UWEC) has awarded a Dh137m ($37.3m) contract to Sogex Oman Company for the operation and maintenance of the water desalination and power generation plant at Qidfa area in Fujairah.

The five-year contract also covers the 179km dual pipeline being laid from the plant to Sweihan in Abu Dhabi to pump up to 180 million gallons a day (mgd) of water. UWEC is developing a 656 MW power unit and a 100-mgd water desalination plant at the same site.

Sogex Oman has participated in the construction and commissioning of numerous large projects in Oman covering different fields, including power generation and water desalination, among others.

South Korea's Doosan Heavy Industries and Construction Co is scheduled to complete the Dh2.9 billion contract for the power unit and the desalination plant by the end of this year, while the partnership of Al Jaber Energy Services and Technip Germany is to complete the Dh1.6 billion contract for the dual pipeline to Sweihan, an 18kme spur to Al Dhaid in Sharjah and the water pumping stations and associated facilities by February next year.
