28 July 2003 - A Profit cockpit has gone into operation for the first time ever in China, installed in Zhungeer Power Plant. Cockpit is an intelligent IT solution supplied by Siemens Power Generation (PG) which enables plant operation to be optimized, particularly with an eye to the onset of competition in the deregulated energy market as of 2005.
The IT solution permits power plant management to mobilize potentials that have not been used to date. A further feature is that this allows plant operating strategy to be flexibly matched to the changing demands of the power market.
This IT solution is tailored to match the requirements of the twin-unit plant and consists of the Profit Cockpit, along with systems for plant management and process optimization. The smooth project implementation and positive operating experience gained in Zhungeer convinced the plant operator, the Chinese Utility Guohua Electric Power Corp. (GEPC), to install this solution in its 600-MW Dingzhou and Taishan plants as well. The contract between the Chinese utility and Siemens AG has already been signed.
The Profit Cockpit in the 660 MW Zhungeer plant was installed by Siemens and handed over in early 2003. Siemens has thus supplied the first integrated comprehensive IT solution for the Chinese market. It covers the entire range of operations from optimized plant operation up through process-controlled maintenance to an approach for web-based power trading, thereby offering a unique range of functionality. A special feature here is the user interface in Chinese to promote fast acceptance by all users, from the plant operators in the control room up to plant management.
Profit Cockpit integrates all lower-level systems and provides high-accuracy, on-line information about availability, load capability and production costs for the plant. In addition, this Siemens IT solution can also generate forecasts about the next days. For the decision-makers in the control room Cockpit forms an intelligent tool which filters the deluge of data, compresses and conditions these appropriately to make underlying trends visible at a glance. This enables a significant improvement in quality and speed of decision-making.
The Power Generation Group (PG) of Siemens AG is one of the premier companies in the international power generation sector. In fiscal 2002 (which ended September 30), Siemens PG posted sales amounting to €9.4 billion and received new orders totalling €10.6 billion. Earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) amounted to €1.582 billion. On September 30, 2002, Siemens PG had a work force of around 26,000 worldwide.
Guohua Electric Power Corporation (GEPC) is a utility serving North China, with a current fleet of 14 power plants, and a further 10 planned. Zhungeer power plant is coal-fired, and located in Inner Mongolia in the vicinity of Hohhot. It supplies the grid with some 660 MW of power.
