25 July 2003 - USA Department of Commerce Deputy Assistant Secretary Kevin Murphy has expressed his hope that his country will play a considerable role in Vietnam's power projects.
Speaking with reporters in Hanoi on Wednesday, Kevin said that Vietnam has a growing need for electricity with the annual demand for power expected to grow annually from 10 to 15 per cent. To meet this demand, an investment of $19-20bn by 2010 will be needed to develop 40 new power generation projects totalling 12 900 MW in capacity, as well as about 15 000 km of 110-500 kV transmission lines and 300,000 km of low medium and low voltage distribution lines.
Murphy is leading the trade mission of executives of nine US power companies, which arrived in Hanoi on Wednesday for a three-day visit.
During their stay, the delegates will meet with officials from the Ministry of Industry, the Ministry of Planning and Investment, Electricity of Vietnam, the Ministry of Trade, the management boards of the southern power project and the Ca Mau gas-nitrogenous-fertiliser power project.
This is the second US trade delegation to visit Vietnam since the US-Vietnam Bilateral Trade Agreement was signed in 2001.
The total capacity of Vietnam's power system in 2001 reached 7631 MW with a total output of 30,603 GWh.
