AECL Candu reactor enters commercial operation in China

24 July 2003 - Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL), the developer and provider of CANDU technology world-wide has announced that its second CANDU reactor has gone into commercial operation at the Qinshan nuclear power plant, 125 km southwest of Shanghai providing 700 MW of power to the national grid.

Unit 2 at Qinshan achieved provisional acceptance at 19:30 hrs. local time July 23, 2003, 16 weeks ahead of the originally scheduled date and was declared in service at 00.18 hrs local time July 24, 2003.

"The Qinshan CANDU Project has exceeded several construction milestones bringing two units on line ahead of time and on budget," said Robert Van Adel, President and Chief Executive Officer of AECL. "I congratulate Dr. Ken Petrunik, project manager and his elite team for their hard work and dedication. Qinshan is a showcase for AECL in the engineering and construction of nuclear power plants in China and around the world. This is one of the best technological achievements for Canada in the last ten years."

Agreements between the China National Nuclear Corporation and AECL were signed in 1996, and physical construction of the Qinshan CANDU Project began 1998.

Unit one went into commercial service six weeks ahead of schedule on December 31, 2002. The combined CANDU Units will help China avoid several million tonnes of carbon dioxide pollution every year, and provide the electricity China needs to prepare for the 2008 Summer Olympic Games and the World's Fair in 2010.

"The Qinshan CANDU Project was a blue print for collaboration between AECL, China and several international suppliers. The ability to manage the size of this project speaks to AECL's experience in mega-projects for energy generation," said Dr. Ken Petrunik. "AECL is most pleased with the excellent partnership and performance of our Chinese partners who have achieved the shortest construction and project schedule of any nuclear power plants built in China."

The CANDU 6 is one of the world's most successful power reactor designs providing emissions-free electricity to countries on four continents.

Atomic Energy of Canada Limited is the design authority for CANDU nuclear reactors and is completing the development of an innovative next generation system - the Advanced CANDU Reactor.
