14 July 2003 - India's State owned Power Grid Corporation Ltd [PGCIL] has appointed Eskom of South Africa for setting up 800 kV sub-stations which would help the company increase transmission at less cost.
"We have technology for setting up the transmission network of 800 kV but these lines cannot be used unless we set up compatible sub-stations," PGCIL CMD R P Singh after a meeting with officials of State Grid Corporation of China, presently visiting India.
Singh said on the 800 kV lines the load of electricity can be increased at a marginal additional cost.
Recently appointed consultant Eskom has been mandated to design the 800 kV sub-stations for PGCIL, Singh said, adding that PGCIL was hoping for a breakthrough soon.
Meanwhile, PGCIL held discussions with the State Grid Corporation of China for possible co-operation in the areas of Regional Load Despatch Centre (RLDC) and High Voltage Direct Control (HVDC) lines.
China and India have almost similar conditions in the power sector with generation units located mainly in the Western and Central regions while load centres are in South and South-East regions, Singh said.
PGCIL has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Chinese company for identifying specific areas of co-operation and assistance, he added.
