11 July 2003 - The development of competitive electricity sectors is progressing across Europe, although it faces a range of obstacles in many countries, according to a report published today by Standard & Poor's Ratings Services.
"Acquisition and merger activity is on the rise in countries such as the U.K. and Germany, while liberalization in Italy is progressing," said Standard & Poor's credit analyst Peter Kernan. "In Norway, on the other hand, sector restructuring stalled in the second quarter of 2003, and the Polish government has yet to address the impediment to competition created by long-term power purchase agreements."
The report provides an overview of electricity sectors in all regions of Europe, and comments on each separate European utility rated by Standard & Poor's.
