July 9, 2003 -- A fire, which ignited Tuesday afternoon during the demolition of an unused oil storage tank at the Moss Landing Power Plant, continued to burn through Wednesday morning.
Duke Energy is cooperating with local and state government agencies, who are managing the event. The company praised the tremendous response of off- site agencies.
The oil storage tank was one of two remaining of 19 originally at the plant, which has been converted to cleaner burning natural gas.
No one was injured in the fire, and all plant employees are accounted for. The plant continues to operate normally.
Moss Landing, which is owned and operated by Duke Energy, is the largest power plant in California. The 2,538-megawatt, natural gas-fired, combined- cycle facility is in Monterey County, approximately 12 miles northwest of Salinas, Calif.
The demolition of the oil storage tanks is part of a modernization project at the plant, which included substantial upgrades and expansion of the plant.
