FPL Energy's Jamaica Bay Energy Center declared fully operational

JUNO BEACH, Fla., July 7, 2003 -- FPL Energy, LLC, a subsidiary of FPL Group, on Monday announced full operation of its 54-MW dual fuel power plant in Queens, New York.

Electricity generated at the new power plant is being sold to the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) under a long-term contract. The new facility is adjacent to FPL Energy's existing Bayswater Energy Center.

"We're pleased that the Jamaica Bay Energy Center is now operational and able to provide much needed power to LIPA's customers," said Jim Robo, president of FPL Energy.

Long Island Power Authority Chairman Richard M. Kessel said, "Demand for electricity in the Rockaways has increased dramatically in recent years. FPL Energy's new Jamaica Bay Energy Center will help LIPA meet that ever-growing demand, especially as some very important local redevelopment projects come to fruition in the near future."

The facility will operate primarily during periods of high electricity demand-for example, from mid-morning to early evening in the heat and humidity typical of summer.

FPL Energy began construction of the facility in January 2003. During construction the plant employed up to 175 people and the site has a full-time staff of nine.

The Jamaica Bay Energy Center is FPL Energy's second power generation facility in New York. In July 2002, FPL Energy began commercial operation at the 54-megawatt Bayswater Energy Center. The output from the Bayswater facility is also sold to LIPA under a long-term contract.

FPL Energy is an unregulated wholesale generator of clean energy, including natural gas, wind, solar, hydroelectric and nuclear. It is a subsidiary of FPL Group, one of the nation's largest providers of electricity-related services with annual revenues of more than $8 billion.

FPL Group's principal subsidiary is Florida Power & Light Company, one of the nation's largest electric utilities, serving more than 4 million customer accounts in Florida.
