7 July 2003 - Alstom has won a €50m turnkey contract to install Algeria's first ever 400kV gas-insulated substation, linking it to the Mediterranean regional 400kV grid.
Under the contract, with Algerian utility SONELGAZ, the Transmission and Distribution (T&D) Sector of Alstom will design and build the substation at Hassi Ameur, near Oran in western Algeria. The substation will connect the Algerian electrical grid with the Mediterranean regional grid.
The substation is one of the biggest in the North African region and will include 18 400kV bays of Alstom's T155 range of gas-insulated switchgear, two 500MVA power transformers, its Space 2000 digital control system and MiCOM protection equipment. Alstom will also be responsible for all civil works, project management and commissioning of the substation.
Hugues Barbier, Regional Vice-President with Alstom's T&D Sector, said: "This contract follows on from other recent important orders in Algeria, Morocco, and Egypt. Our strength in project work, coupled with our comprehensive and competitive product range, is key to our ongoing success in the region."
