Magnolia Power Project marked by groundbreaking in Los Angeles

July 3, 2003 -- The start of two years of construction work for the Magnolia Power Plant was recently marked by a symbolic groundbreaking and tree planting ceremony at Burbank Water and Power's (BWP) electricity generating complex in Burbank, California.

The event was attended by approximately 100 people, including local dignitaries and mayors of the six cities that will benefit from the Magnolia Power Plant. Representing ALSTOM were David Benson, HRSG project manager from Australia, and William Felsher, Marketing and Communications Director for the Heat Recovery and Plants Business.

When completed in mid-2005, the 320MWe combined cycle power plant will serve as a reliable and lower-cost electricity resource for not only the Burbank area of Los Angeles, but also the neighbouring cities of Anaheim, Glendale, Pasadena, Cerritos and Colton.

This is the first time the California Energy Commission and local Air Quality District have approved the construction of a new power plant in a Southern California urban area. The project will help the six cities meet peak summer electrical needs in 2005.

ALSTOM is supplying one OCCTM (Optimized for Cycling and Constructability) horizontal Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG) for a GE 7FA gas turbine, a burner management system, a selective catalyst reduction system, an oxidation catalyst system and a boiler recirculation pump.

Demonstrating ALSTOM's truly global nature, the HRSG will be built and then shipped to the site in California from ALSTOM's manufacturing centre in Portugal. To reduce erection costs, risk, and schedule, the HRSG is being supplied in "C-Frame" modules that integrate the pressure parts, support steel, casing and insulation.

Along with using the latest in air emissions controls, the project will use reclaimed wastewater for all of its power plant water requirements. All of this reclaimed wastewater will be used on site, thus eliminating any external discharge.

ALSTOM is a provider of energy and transport infrastructure. The company serves the energy market through its activities in the fields of power generation and power transmission and distribution, and the transport market through its activities in rail and marine. In fiscal year 2002/03, ALSTOM had annual sales in excess of €20 billion and employed around 100,000 people in over 70 countries worldwide.
