National Research Council releases information from carbon management workshop
July 3, 2003 -- The National Research Council's (NRC's) Committee on Novel Approaches to the Management of Greenhouse Gases from Energy Systems held a workshop at the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Center in Irvine, California, on February 12-14, 2003, to identify promising lines of research that could lead to currently unforeseen breakthroughs in the management of carbon from energy systems.
The information identified by participants in the workshop has been published in an NRC report, Novel Approaches to Carbon Management (available online) at this location, and is being used by the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE's) National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) to award grants for new research in carbon management.
Once proposals are received in response to DOE's solicitation (see below), the NRC committee will hold a meeting to review the proposals and will evaluate them on their scientific, technical, engineering, and environmental merits, among others.
The NETL is seeking applications for the Grant Solicitation No. DE-PS26-03NT41777 entitled "Novel Approaches to the Management of Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Fossil Fuel Energy Systems."
It is the goal of the solicitation to develop novel, cost effective alternatives to current technology for the capture and sequestration of CO2. This activity will support the NETL's Carbon Sequestration Program target to reduce the costs of CO2 capture and sequestration.

The program areas of interest in which DOE is soliciting proposals mirror the four topical subdivisions of the NRC workshop report, and include the following:
1. Advanced separations techniques,
2. Advanced subsurface technologies,
3. Advanced geochemical methods, and
4. Novel niches-that is, various concepts (including biological) for converting CO2 to useful products, among other ideas.
DOE's solicitation will remain open through July 9, 2003.
