2 July 2003 - New analysis from independent market analysts, Datamonitor less than four years after the Bersani Decree introduced limited competition among Italian electricity suppliers reveals that more than half the country's major energy user market has already switched supplier.
The preliminary results from Datamonitor's survey of Italian major energy buyers, which covers 20 per cent of the over-1GWh market (by volume), suggest that levels of customer switching in this segment reached 22 per cent in 2002, and will remain equally high over the next 12 months.
This will lead to at least another €2.5bn worth of electricity supply contracts changing hands in the over-1GWh segment alone. While approximately two-thirds of this business will be lost by Enel, many customers who have already left them for another supplier are planning to switch again, in search of better prices and/or better service.
Within Datamonitor's survey sample, Edison has taken approximately 35 per cent of the business lost by Enel since market opening. The survey includes details of 34 ex-Enel customers, with a total annual consumption of 1.4TWh, won by Edison during the latest contract round. Swiss-based Atel has also captured large volumes of business. Other new business winners include Energia, ENI, EGL and Taularia, who demonstrate that smaller regional suppliers can also win business from incumbents in the large-customer segment.
