30 June 2003 - Siemens has announced that commissioning of the new process information management system (PIM) for the Gemeinschafts-M¸ll-Verbrennungsanlage Niederrhein GmbH (GMVA) waste incineration plant in Oberhausen was performed within a record time of one hour.
This modern system installed under a turnkey contract by Siemens Power Generation (PG), had to be commissioned without an on-site test run, as parallel operation with the plants existing MADAM P system was not possible. The extremely short switchover time was achieved by the use of a special commissioning strategy. The newly installed IT solution, comprised of a "2000-point license", a high-availability server and an interface PC, offers far more functionality than the previous system.
The PIM closes the gap between the TELEPERM M process control system and the office environment. As a result, all key process data are now available online and can be compressed, processed to yield reports and e-mailed as required. In addition, data can be integrated into easily constructed process displays and accessed via any PC. Another feature of the Siemens IT solution is the provision for remote maintenance and manual entry of legacy data. "We are extremely happy with the new Siemens system, particularly its reduced maintenance requirements thanks to the use of Windows standards", said Michael Braitschink, head of the I&C department at GMVA.
A major advantage over the old system is the high flexibility of the PIM for new requirements relating to evaluation, archiving and documentation. It also permits the immediate electronic distribution of information without any user IT expertise. This allows staff to concentrate on their core competence to retain an edge in an increasingly more competitive waste incineration market.
The GMVA plant has been in operation since 1975 and consists of four lines with a total incineration capacity of approximately 580 000 tons per year.
