Japan's Shinko Electric to sell domestic wind power systems

25 June 2003 - Shinko Electric Co. announced on Tuesday that it would begin selling home-use, small-scale wind power generation equipment as early as the end of September.

Windmills will have five vertically arranged blades. When the wind blows, the windmills will turn the vertical shafts of the power generation equipment.

Purchasers will assemble the equipment themselves. This will allow Shinko Electric to offer systems for 200,000 yen ($1700) to 300 000 yen, which is only about a third of the price of similar equipment offered by other companies.

Shinko Electric will sell four models, with blade configuration diameters of 1.6 to 4 meters.

The company calculates that the smallest system can save almost 1000 yen a month in electricity costs assuming a wind speed of 7 meters per second. The largest system can trim electric bills by about 5500 yen a month.
