20 June 2003 - The Russian government yesterday approved a set of reforms to the country's electricity industry, scheduled to take effect by 2005.
Andrey Sharonov, the first deputy Minister of Economic Development and Trade said that the cabinet had now given its approval to the plan which envisages the final formation of the wholesale market infrastructure; the establishment of a retail market structure; and the creation of wholesale electricity generating companies.
A government decision on setting up such companies will be signed within the next few weeks.
