
Glenn Cannon, the new chair of APPA's board.
NASHVILLE, TENN., June 18, 2003-- Glenn Cannon, general manager for Waverly Light and Power (WL&P), Waverly, Iowa, was named chair of the board of directors of the American Public Power Association (APPA) at the association's annual National Conference this week in Nashville, Tenn.
Cannon served as APPA's chair-elect during the past year and as APPA vice-chair in 2001-2002. He was a member of the association's Board of Directors from 1994 to 2000, and has been active with numerous APPA committees throughout his years with WL&P.
Prior to joining WL&P in 1990, Cannon worked for public power utility Santee Cooper, Moncks Corner, S.C. in marketing energy efficiency.
In the public power arena, Cannon is a well-known champion for a cleaner environment. Under his direction WL&P has received numerous national awards for energy efficiency and renewable energy programs, including awards from the U.S. Department of Energy and National Renewable Energy Laboratory.
WL&P was awarded the first Award of Excellence from APPA's Demonstration of Energy-Efficient Developments (DEED) program. Under Cannon's leadership, WL&P and Santee Cooper earned a total of seven Energy Innovator Awards from DEED. The Energy Innovator Award honors initiatives that provide better service to customers or increase the efficiency of utility operations. Cannon holds five patents for soybean based transformer oils.
Jan Schori, general manager of Sacramento, Calif., Municipal Utilities District, was named APPA's chair-elect. Malcolm Green, general manager & CEO of Greenville, N.C., Utilities Commission, was named vice chair. Mark Crisson, director of utilities of Tacoma, Wash., Public Utilities, will serve as immediate past chair. Herman Morris, Jr., president & CEO, Memphis, Tenn., Light Gas & Water, continues as board treasurer.
In addition to the new officers, four individuals will join APPA's board of directors to serve three-year terms: E. Leon Daggett, general manager for Kansas City, Kansas, Board of Public Utilities; Roger A. Fontes, general manager & CEO of Florida Municipal Power Agency, Orlando; Larry K. Musick, superintendent of the Franklin, Ky., Electric Plant Board; and Maude Grantham-Richards, electric utility director of Farmington, N.M., Electric Utility System.
The American Public Power Association is the national service organization representing the nation's more than 2,000 community- and state-owned electric utilities.
