UK appoints new energy minister

18 June 2003 - UK Trade and Industry Secretary Patricia Hewitt today announced the responsibilities of the new ministerial team at the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), which included the appointment of Stephen Timms as Energy Minister.

The change of department head followed the retirement of Brian Wilson, which was announced as part of the government re-shuffle last week.

Patricia Hewitt said, "I would like to pay tribute to the work of Brian Wilson who retired from Government last week to live a more normal life. "He leaves behind a strong legacy - an energy policy based on low carbon and energy from sustainable sources. The strengthened oil and gas industries owe much to his support and work."

As well as Energy and Sustainable Development, Stephen Timms will also have responsibility for E-Commerce, Postal Services and Corporate Social Responsibility. Timms has been an MP since 1994 and represents East Ham. Within the DTI has held the position of Minister of State for e-Commerce and Competitiveness.
