Dolphin conducts Qatar survey of coral reefs

16 June 2003 - Dolphin Energy Ltd (DEL) yesterday announced it is conducting with the University of Qatar a detailed survey of coral reefs around Ras Laffan in northern Qatar. DEL has employed the services of the university's Scientific and Research Centre (SARC) to make a full environment impact assessment of the area in which its future gas pipelines will be laid.

"We need to determine the current condition of the coral, so that we can organise suitable protection methods along the pipeline routing. The construction of various future pipelines will require careful management in order for us to preserve the local subsea environment," said Yousif Al Khater, deputy general manager of DEL in Qatar. DEL will begin building a major plant in Ras Laffan next year in which the company will process Qatari gas for transport by pipeline to the UAE, commencing in 2006, he said.

The Dolphin Gas Project involves the production and processing of natural gas from Qatar's North Field and transportation of the dry gas by pipeline to the UAE, beginning in 2006. DEL's first initiative comes on stream in the fourth quarter of this year when its natural gas pipeline from Al Ain to Fujairah is inaugurated. This pipeline will supply the Union Water and Electricity Co in Fujairah initially with natural gas from Oman and subsequently with Dolphin gas from Qatar.
