12 June 2003 - The supply of electricity to the Jordanian International Industrial Zone of Aqaba for secured with the official start of operation of a 160 MVA capacity transformer station, according to a senior government spokesman. The zone has a considerable need for electricity said National Electrical Power Company (NEPCO) Director General Ahmad Hiyasat.
Establishing the plant, he indicated, cost JD6m ($8.4m) funded by the company and the Jordan Industrial Estates Corporation. According to an agreement signed between both sides, NEPCO shouldered 50 per cent of the cost, explained Hiyasat. Setting up the station, he clarified, will encourage investments to the southern Governorate of Aqaba which the government aims to turn into a distinguished regional economic hub to attract more investments and consequently creating more job opportunities.
The station will be linked with the Aqaba Thermal Power Station which is designed to function on gas provided to Jordan from Egypt with a 650 MW capacity. The company last January signed an agreement with a Spanish firm to install two electrical transformation stations in Amman and in southern Qatrana area.
NEPCO, capitalized at JD 250 000, seeks to expand its work and start offering consultancy services for some Arab and foreign countries.
