Work starts on new Vietnam hydro project

23 December 2002 - Work on construction of the Tuyen Quang hydro-electric power plant started yesterday. The 342-kW power plant in the northern province of Tuyen Quang will be built by the Song Da Construction Corporation at a cost of VND7,522bn ($500m).

The first turbine group is scheduled to begin electricity generation in 2006. Once completed construction in 2007, the plant will supply the national grid with almost 1.3bn kWh a year. With a 1.7bn cu. m. reservoir, the plant will help in flood control in the Red River delta, Hanoi capital and Tuyen Quang township.

Addressing the ground-breaking ceremony, permanent Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung highlighted the significance of the Tuyen Quang hydro-electric power plant in the country's economic development and poverty reduction in the province. He asked Tuyen Quang, Bac Kan and Ha Giang provinces, relevant agencies and units to pay attention to helping the local people resettle in new places and stabilise their lives and production.
