Thai minister will not delay Egat privatization

19 December 2002 - Thailand must proceed with power industry privatization in 2004 and can't use its planned hydropower plant as an excuse to postpone its privatization, the Bangkok Post reports.

Thai Energy Minister Pongthep Thepkanchana was responding to comments emanating from the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand.

"The privatization of EGAT must be completed as scheduled in 2004. The authority can't delay it by using the THB200bn ($ 4.64bn) hydropower plant project as a pretext because they are not related," Pongthep said.

EGAT Governor Sitthiporn Ratanopas earlier said the EGAT privatization, if it proceeds as planned, would negatively affect its mobilization of funds for investment in the hydropower plant.

"The (hydropower plant) project is one of co-operation between the governments of Burma and Thailand and is proposed on a long-term basis. So, there is a chance of additional fund-raising in the future," Pongthep said.
