ALSTOM awarded major contract to supply 640 MW coal-fired utility boiler

Nov. 21, 2002 -- ALSTOM has been awarded a contract worth over 162 million euros by Santee Cooper, South Carolina's state-owned electric and water utility, to supply a 640 MW sub-critical pulverized coal fired utility boiler to be located at Cross Generating Station in Berkeley County, near Cross, South Carolina.

Santee Cooper is scheduled to break ground on the project in December 2002, with commercial operation projected for January 2007. The new boiler will be the third generating unit at Santee Cooper's Cross Generating Station. It will be situated adjacent to the ALSTOM-supplied Cross Unit 2, a 540 MW pulverized coal-fired unit put into service in 1983. The new unit will burn coal supplied from Kentucky, and up to 30% of petroleum coke.

Under the terms of the contract, ALSTOM will provide the design, supply, erection, and commissioning of the pulverized coal fired boiler and associated auxiliary equipment. As a world leader in utility-class boilers, ALSTOM has built more than 22 pulverized coal fired units in the 600+ MW size globally since 1990.

The new boiler will provide the Cross Generating Station with greater operating flexibility through the use of ALSTOM's proven TFS 2000™ system - which includes a tilting tangential windbox with two levels of separated overfire air, and HP pulverizes with dynamic classifiers.

Operating efficiency will also be increased with ALSTOM's patented split economizer, which maximizes heat recovery during low load boiler operation, and through the use of ALSTOM's HP pulverizes with dynamic classifiers, which maximize carbon burnout while achieving the required nitrogen oxide (NOx) emission levels.

Both in-furnace TFS 2000™ and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) combustion techniques will be used to keep NOx emissions as low as <0.07 lb/106 Btu. This will enable Santee Cooper to maximize fuel flexibility, maintain high operating efficiency, and be one of the cleanest pulverized coal fired facilities in the world.

Santee Cooper is the primary source of power distributed by the state's 20 electric co-operatives to approximately 600,000 customers located in all of the state's 46 counties. Santee Cooper also supplies power to 32 large industrial facilities, the cities of Bamberg and Georgetown, and the Charleston Air Force Base.

ALSTOM is a global specialist in energy and transport infrastructure. The Company serves the energy market through its activities in the fields of power generation and power transmission and distribution, and the transport market through its activities in rail and marine.
