Peabody resumes partial coal shipments from its Big Mountain operating unit

ST. LOUIS, Aug. 19, 2002 -- A Peabody Energy subsidiary has resumed partial operations at the Big Mountain operating unit in Prenter, W.Va., providing 170 jobs at the mine and the preparation facility.

Approximately 120,000 tons of coal will be produced monthly.

Market conditions led to the idling of Big Mountain in April. The company continues to closely monitor market conditions and adjust production levels accordingly.

Peabody Energy is the world's largest private-sector coal company, with 2001 sales of 194 million tons of coal and $2.7 billion in revenues. Its coal products fuel more than 9 percent of all U.S. electricity generation and more than 2 percent of worldwide electricity generation.
