HANCOCK'S BRIDGE, N.J., Aug. 1, 2002 -- PSEG Nuclear LLC plans to produce more power at its Hope Creek Generating Station in southern New Jersey. Preliminary studies have shown that approximately 10% more electricity can be generated while maintaining all safety margins and environmental standards.
"Producing more power from our existing assets is a good deal for everyone," said Harry Keiser PSEG Nuclear LLC president. "Hope Creek has been performing very well for our consumers, and with these improvements it will help us reach our goal of being in the top quartile of all nuclear plants in the country."
This increased generating capacity will be achieved by implementing both an Extended Power Uprate as well as the installation of more efficient plant equipment. This will be accomplished in a two-step process: 1) a License Change Request to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), which will include a detailed review of plant safety performance and required plant improvements, 2) after receiving the approved license change from the NRC, plant modifications will be implemented that will allow increased power generation.
General Electric Co., has been selected as a major contractor to help with both steps of this project. GE has an existing Extended Power Uprate methodology that has been approved by the NRC and successfully utilized at various other utilities in implementing similar power increases. GE will also provide the main steam turbine replacement as one of the major modifications that will be required for the increased megawatt generation.
Initial project work has begun, with project completion expected during the Hope Creek scheduled outage in 2004.
Earlier this year, PSEG Nuclear LLC announced turbine upgrades for its two-unit Salem Generating Station. When both the Hope Creek and Salem projects are completed, PSEG Nuclear LLC will have the capability of producing approximately 200 additional megawatts of power from its existing nuclear plants in New Jersey.
PSEG Nuclear operates the Salem and Hope Creek generation stations located in Salem County, NJ. Each of the two Salem Units is a 1,150 megawatt pressurized water reactor. Hope Creek is a single-unit 1,100 megawatt boiling water reactor. The three units are located on one site and together comprise the second largest nuclear site in the United States.
PSEG Nuclear is a subsidiary of PSEG Power, one of the largest independent power producers and energy trading companies in the U.S., and an affiliate of Public Service Electric and Gas Company (PSE&G), New Jersey's largest electric and gas utility. PSEG Power currently has approximately 16,000 megawatts of electric generating capacity in operation, construction, or advanced development. In addition to PSEG Nuclear LLC, PSEG Power's subsidiaries include PSEG Fossil, which owns and operates fossil-fueled generating facilities and PSEG Energy Resources and Trade. on of the nation's largest (by volume) energy trading companies. PSEG Power and PSE&G are subsidiaries of Public Service Enterprise Group Incorporated (PEG: NYSE), a diversified energy holding company with headquarters in Newark, NJ.
