Mirant begins commercial operations at Indiana power plant

ATLANTA, July 19, 2002 -- Mirant Friday announced that it began commercial operation at its Sugar Creek generating plant, a 300-MW natural gas-fired power generating facility near Terre Haute, Ind.

"Mirant plans to add approximately 1,500 megawatts of electricity generation in North America this year," said Randy Harrison, senior vice president, Mirant.

"The addition of Sugar Creek to our North American generation fleet is another important step towards meeting that milestone, and providing the U.S. with reliable and efficient power."

This generating facility will be used during peak demand periods and is the first of two construction phases planned at Sugar Creek. The second phase of the plant, a 259- megawatt combined cycle facility, is scheduled for commercial operation during the summer of 2003.
