Barnhart Crane and Rigging uses 'Bridge Jumper' in Arkansas transport

MEMPHIS, Tenn., July 17, 2002 -- Barnhart Crane and Rigging, a provider of heavy rigging and transportation solutions, nears completion of the transportation and erection of major power plant equipment for one of the nation's largest gas fired power plants in El Dorado, Ark.

The project involved transporting over 120 turbines, generators, boiler modules and other machinery in excess of 200 tons approximately six miles from the railroad siding to the construction site. The route traversed two bridges unable to support the full weight of the equipment. Barnhart Crane and Rigging provided a novel solution for the transport.

"Barnhart was able to utilize a bridge-jumping device in this transport, making the project more economical and time efficient," said Dave Jorgensen, project manager.

The bridge jumper is towed into position and hydraulically lowered onto the bridge, allowing cargo weighing over 270 tons to be transported across spans that would not normally be able to accommodate such heavy tonnage. The bridge jumper erects itself and distributes the weight load across the bridge, allowing the heavy equipment to move across in safety.
