Madison Gas & Electric seeks regulatory approval for West Campus Cogeneration Facility

MADISON, Wis., June 17, 2002 -- Madison Gas and Electric Co. (MGE) recently applied for a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity (CPCN) with the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin (PSCW) for the proposed West Campus Cogeneration Facility. The document is required for PSCW approval of the facility.

The CPCN filing includes a study of engineering, financial and environmental issues related to the project. Public hearings are also part of the review. The PSCW has 180 days to review the project.

The natural gas-fired cogeneration facility will provide steam heat and chilled water air-conditioning for the University of Wisconsin-Madison and 150 megawatts of electricity for MGE customers. It will be one of the most efficient and cleanest power plants in Wisconsin.

Construction of the facility is scheduled to begin in February 2003 with completion set for late summer 2004. Additional information on the CPCN can be found at www.mge.com.

MGE is a public utility that generates and distributes electricity to more than 128,000 customers in Dane County. The company also transports and distributes natural gas to nearly 123,000 customers in seven south-central and western Wisconsin counties. MGE has served the Madison area since 1896.
