KILLINGLY, Conn., June 14, 2002 -- PG&E National Energy Group recently announced that Lake Road Generating, its 840-MW natural gas-fired combined-cycle power plant has begun commercial service. Located in Killingly, Conn., the plant sells wholesale power into the New England market.
"This plant will help provide a reliable, economical, efficient power supply for the region, using advanced technology designed to enhance environmental performance," said Chris Iribe, president and chief operating officer for PG&E National Energy Group's east region. "In addition to generating enough power to meet the needs of about 800,000 homes, we look forward to being an integral part of the community."
Three ALSTOM GT24 combustion turbines exhaust waste heat into associated heat recovery steam generators. This steam is directed to additional turbines that also generate electricity. Combined-cycle technology optimizes efficiency, minimizes environmental impacts and provides a reliable source of electric power. Lake Road expects to complete construction of its distillate fuel oil facilities this fall. Low sulfur distillate will provide an alternative source of fuel.
Lake Road uses advanced environmental control technologies designed to ensure that air emissions comply with state and federal air quality standards. Emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) are controlled by a combination of dry, low-NOx burner technology and selective catalytic reduction. The plant also incorporates a catalyst to reduce carbon monoxide emissions. The facility uses air-cooled condensers to process steam to water for re-use. This technology reduces the demand for water from local resources.
The facility's tax payments to the town of Killingly are expected to total $55 million over the next 20 years. In the past three years, the project created 800 union construction jobs.
Headquartered in Bethesda, Md., PG&E National Energy Group develops, builds, owns and operates electric generating and natural gas pipeline facilities and provides energy trading, marketing and risk-management services.
