AEP completes recovery from Cook plant switchyard fire

BRIDGMAN, Mich., June 13, 2002 -- American Electric Power has completed the recovery from a switchyard fire at its Donald C. Cook Nuclear Plant, ending Alert status at 11:54 p.m. Wednesday when equipment affected by the fire was restored.

The worker who suffered minor injuries was transported to a local hospital, where he was treated and released.

At 1:45 p.m. Wednesday, equipment failure in the Unit 1 345 KV switchyard resulted in a fire and activation of the Cook Emergency Plan at the Alert level. The fire, which resulted from the failure of a switchyard current transformer, was brought under control by 2:30 p.m. by the site fire brigade.

The Donald C. Cook Nuclear Plant is a two-unit, 2,110 megawatt plant located in Bridgman, Mich. Unit 2 was at 100 percent power during the Alert and Unit 1, which is returning to full power after a refueling outage, was at 68 percent.
