Black & Veatch completes Bowling Green, Mo., power plant ahead of schedule

Kansas City, Mo., June 10, 2002 -- Black & Veatch announced recently that it has completed full engineering, procurement and construction services ahead of schedule in the development of AmerenUE's Peno Creek Energy Center located in Bowling Green, Mo.

The center was in full commercial operation on May 26, 2002, which is one week prior to the original due date.

The peaker plant, designed to supply power during periods of heightened demand, can utilize either natural gas or oil as a fuel. It consists of four Pratt & Whitney combustion generators operating in simple cycle, each capable of 50 MW for a total capacity of 200 MW. "Higher demand during the summer months is causing shortages of electric generating capacity in the Midwest," said Fred Pope, general manager of generation engineering & technical services for AmerenUE.

"Electrical usage in our region continues to increase by one to two percent annually. The additional 200 megawatts of generating capacity will help provide needed power for AmerenUE customers and generally bolster our region's electric supply reliability." In addition to standard EPC work, Black & Veatch also performed considerable site work in preparation of the plant's construction. "I was impressed that Black & Veatch not only met an aggressive schedule, but they got the work done safely," Pope said.
