RICHMOND, Va., June 5, 2002 -- Energy producer Dominion said it is prepared to meet summertime demand from its 2.1 million electric customers in Virginia and North Carolina.
"We have adequate and reliable supplies to meet our customer's demands this summer," said Thomas F. Farrell II, chief executive officer of Dominion Energy, the electric generating unit of Dominion. "But it is always in the best interest of all our customers to use energy wisely and conserve whenever possible."
Company forecasters predict peak demand for electricity this summer will be 16,968 megawatts. Customers set the one-hour demand record of 16,515 megawatts on Aug. 9, 2001, between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m.
The total summer capacity for the company's service area is 19,092 megawatts. Of this total, more than 900 megawatts were added during the past two years.
Since 1990, Dominion has added nearly 370,000 new residential and commercial electricity customers. Over the same time period, the company has added about 6,400 megawatts of generation capacity.
Dominion is one of the nation's largest producers of energy, with a production capability of more than 3 trillion British thermal unit of energy per day.
