MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., May 31, 2002 -- Catalytica Energy Systems Inc. has received a 2002 Clean Air Award from the American Lung Associations of the Bay Area for its efforts in promoting air quality through application of its Xonon® Cool Combustion system.
The awards were presented at the Twelfth Annual Clean Air Luncheon held on May 29, 2002, where the American Lung Association honored local Bay Area businesses, organizations, and individuals who have made significant contributions in the fight against air pollution.
In a press release announcing the awards, Executive Director of the American Lung Association of San Francisco and San Mateo counties Linda Civitello-Joy, commented, "We need to honor the efforts of those people and organizations that help maintain the good air in the coastal cities, and support others who work hard to improve the bad air in the inland cities. These efforts often go unrecognized."
Craig Kitchen, president and CEO of Catalytica Energy Systems, commented, "We are gratified to have been recognized by such a prominent and well-respected organization for our continued efforts to make clean air a reality through the use of our Xonon Cool Combustion system to significantly reduce emissions from gas-fired power generating sources. Our operation of a Xonon-equipped turbine at Silicon Valley Power continues to provide clean, reliable power on the commercial utility grid, serving the electricity needs of approximately 1,500 homes in surrounding Bay Area communities."
Catalytica Energy Systems designs, develops, and manufactures advanced products for more effective energy production. Its proprietary technologies include the use of catalysts to create solutions to ease the environmental impact of power generation.
The company is marketing its first product, Xonon® Cool Combustion, a combustion technology that achieves ultra-low emissions levels for gas turbine power production. Xonon prevents the formation of pollution, particularly nitrogen oxides (NOx), a primary contributor to smog, through a proprietary catalytic combustion process.
Additional technology development efforts include work on fuel processing for fuel cells, as well as adaptation of Xonon technology to micro-turbines, hybrid gas turbine fuel cells, and diesel applications. Find Catalytica Energy Systems on the Worldwide Web at www.CatalyticaEnergy.com.
