ATLANTA, May 9, 2002 -- Oglethorpe Power Corp. has placed into commercial operation the first two of six, 108,000-kilowatt generating units under construction as part of a $280 million natural gas-powered energy facility in rural Talbot County.
The facility is owned by Talbot Electric Membership Corporation (EMC), an entity formed by a group of 30 Georgia EMCs who are participating in the power plant project. Siemens-Westinghouse, Inc. is the primary contractor and equipment supplier for the project.
Oglethorpe Power began constructing the facility last summer. Two additional units are expected to begin commercial operation by June of this year, with the final two units coming on-line by June 2003. The plant will be known as the Talbot Energy Facility.
"We are very pleased to be bringing these first units on-line ahead of schedule and well in time to provide needed peaking power for participating EMCs for the summer cooling season," said Dale R. Murphy, vice president, generation projects.
In addition to providing additional power for Georgia's citizens, the new facility is expected to provide more than a million dollars in annual property tax, sales tax and other benefits to the county when it is fully operational.
"We appreciate greatly the cooperation and support that we've received from local officials and other members of the community in Talbot County and the surrounding areas," Murphy said. "Without their support, our project would not have moved forward as smoothly as it has."
Oglethorpe Power Corporation is a not-for-profit cooperative serving 39 of Georgia's 42 customer-owned EMCs. These EMCs provide electric power to more than 3.7 million Georgians.
